‘ I tried to turn off a bedside lamp and seemed like something wasn’t right with me. I understood directly away it was a stroke.’ In July 2023, after an active vacation kayaking and walking, Bob all of a sudden had a stroke. He was zipped air ambulance to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, where he invested four weeks restoring. ‘I used the health club frequently and did neurorehabilitation online (NROL)’. NROL is a group rehabilitation programme for individuals who have had a stroke or have other neurological conditions. ‘I had a structured timetable which offered me something to look forward to weekly – socially, psychologically and mentally.’ Bob thanked NHS staff for ‘the great assistance’ and the ongoing physiotherapy he got. ‘ Working alongside nurses and seeing the difference they made inspired me to believe, ‘I could do that!” Meet Sharon, a sexual health nurse and non-medical prescriber who began her nursing journey in 1985 at the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital. In 2010 she signed up with Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust and continues to serve clients in Hertfordshire. ‘I enjoyed helping individuals and discovering the body, so nursing just felt right.’ Sharon reflects. Sharon has actually worked in male infertility, menopause, miscarriage and colposcopy to name a few, revealing the vast array of areas in which nurses make a difference. ‘Truly, I can’t consider an area where nurses do not make an impact in some kind,’ Sharon confesses. On why her role is special, Sharon explains, ‘The care, kindness, and compassion we bring make the nursing function special.
