Job Overview

1-2 x seeding rig operators / general farmhands starting early March 2025.

This family business usually employs around 4 employees at a time, resulting in a friendly, family like atmosphere at work. Many of their staff members have returned after their travels to do a second or third season. Multiple employees have stayed for more than a year, so new employees are usually surrounded by like-minded workmates that can offer plenty of guidance.

The roles being offered have unlimited work hours available, pay above award rates, and provide accommodation and a true rural farming lifestyle.

 

The Farm

7000ha mixed crop and sheep farm.

The business crops 5000ha per year with lupins, peas, chickpeas, oats and wheat. They also run a 2000ha annual hay program.

Over 2000 breeding merino ewes are also managed on the property.

 

Main job description

Ripping up starts from early March to April, depending on the weather.

Seeding will be from early April to early/mid-June, running two seeding rigs. First rig consists of a Challenger MT 975E, 60ft Concord airseeder bar and a Simplicity airseeder box.

The second rig includes a Versatile 575, Massey Ferguson 9750 60ft bar and Massey Ferguson 9950 airseeder box.

A small proportion of the sowed land requires prickle harrowing operating a Case 9280.

All rigs require the operator to be capable of keeping a straight line as they use manual steering going “round and round” the paddocks.

General farmhand work such as fencing, grading, machinery maintenance and general repairs / projects available all year. Optional sheep work is available and can include shifting sheep between paddocks, backlining, drenching, drafting, etc.

 

Skills you need

  • Preferably non-smoking
  • Strictly no drugs
  • Strong work ethic
  • Willingness and ability to work at least 50 hrs per week on average
  • Capable of pushing 80 hrs per week for about 3 x 4 weeks throughout the year
  • Attention to detail
  • Very careful machinery operator
  • Clean-living
  • Punctuality
  • Capable of working in a team

Ideally, the business is looking for someone long-term. Someone passionate about agriculture and the rural lifestyle. Happy to share a beer and a laugh at the end of the workday.

 

What are your rewards

Hourly pay rate ranging between $30 – $45 per hour depending on experience, skillset, duration of stay, and work ethic.

Shared accommodation in form of a basic farmhouse with 4 bedrooms, kitchen, and bathroom. Usually shared between 1-2 people.

Meals are not supplied during seeding.

 

The surrounding community

The local community provides sporting opportunities for everyone, including football, netball, hockey, cricket, swimming, bowling, and dart clubs. The local Community Resource Centre does an excellent job at organising community events throughout the year, such as triathlons, marathons, and more.

Other facilities include a couple of places to have a beer and feed, a supermarket, hardware store, roadhouse, pharmacy, library, gym, swimming pool, basketball courts, etc.
